High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), also known as Next-Generation Video Coding, is a new video coding standard which is currently under the joint development of ISO/IEC MPEG and ITU-T VCEG. This new standard aims to provide higher compression efficiency (~50% bit-rate reduction) than the state-of-the-art AVC standard while being capable of operating in the low-complexity or high-efficiency mode. Its applications range from mobile HD video to Ultra HD video, covering a frame resolution from WVGA (800x480) to 4kx2k and beyond, such as 8Kx4K (which is about 16 times the frame resolution of Full HD). Since 2010, our lab has actively contributed to the development of the HEVC standard. On behalf of NCTU, we submitted a proposal in response to the Joint Call-for-Proposals in the 1st JCT-VC meeting in Dresden, Germany. In terms of the subjective test results, our scheme ranked 12 overall and 10 in Low Delay conditions among 27 proposals, and was top-performer in 2 test cases. As of today, we have submitted more than 20 contribution documents. Several techniques are being evaluated in Core Experiments/Tool Experiments.

High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC,也被稱為Next-Generation Video Coding)是一個嶄新的視訊壓縮技術,目前正由ISO/IEC MPEG及ITU-T VCEG所共同開發。 此新標準的目標,是提供比目前眾所皆知的AVC視訊壓縮標準更高的編碼效率(約節省50%的位元率),同時可以在高效能及低複雜度兩種模式下操作。 其涵蓋了從行動裝置上的HD到Ultra HD影片的應用,解析度從WVGA (800x480)到4Kx2K或更高,譬如8Kx4K(約為Full HD解析度的16倍)。 從2010年開始,本實驗室一直很活躍地投身於HEVC標準的開發。 以代表國立交通大學的身份,我們提交了一份對Joint Call-for-Proposals競賽的回應並參與了在德國德累斯頓舉行的第一次JCT-VC會議。 在主觀視覺的評比中,我們的提案在27個參與競賽的單位中拿到了平均12名,Low Delay測試下第10名的佳績,而且我們在其中兩個測試條件下得到了最高分。 直至今天,我們已經發表了超過20份的提案文件。當中的技術也正在Core Experiments/Tool Experiments中被評估中。
